Since December 2022, Codeberg is proud to host the Forgejo project as announced in their blog post. Started as a soft-fork of Gitea being unhappy about governance and Gitea moving in an intransparent for-profit direction, Forgejo has quickly evolved into an awesome community focusing on stability, security and user experience.
There are ongoing discussions about changing the workflow ending in a hard fork, and we believe that it allows the project to double down on its stated goals.
Forgejo is actively working on Forge federation and you can find a summary that is kept up to date in their issue tracker. We believe that Forge federation will be the future, ensuring interoperability not only across self-hosted and public instances, but also across different software services like Forgejo, Gitlab, Gitea and hopefully others.
